New Zealand Pre Decimal (£sd) Coins

  • In 1933 New Zealand introduced its own coinage based on the British Pound Sterling. The old pre decimal £sd.
  • Initially six coins were minted in silver (50%): Half Crown  (2/6),  Florin ( 2/-), Shilling (1/-), Sixpence (6d), Threepence (3d).
  • The use of 50% silver was discontinued in 1947 and replaced with a cupro-nickel alloy. 
  • In 1940 two further coins were minted, these in copper: Penny (1d), Halfpenny (1/2d).
  • All coins were minted most years up until 1965 and discontinued in 1967 when New Zealand changed to the decimal system using the dollar as a base.
  •  Coin mintage numbers vary, some years have large mintages while others a lot less and some years none at all.
  • ​​The higher denominations such as the Half Crown tend to have lower mintage numbers and are scarcer while the Penny and Halfpennies are a lot higher and are most common.
